Gel press-on nails: how to choose your first set

Choosing your first set of press-on nails is as much about comfort as it is about style. Before falling for a design, check three things: your nail size, the length you enjoy wearing and the adhesive that suits your everyday routine.

Start here: choose the right width for each nail, a length you feel comfortable with and a design you will love wearing. Everything else comes next.

What are gel press-on nails?

A press-on is an artificial nail that has already been shaped and decorated, ready to attach to your natural nail. At NELI, nail artists handcraft each set in gel: you choose a finished manicure, then apply it with nail glue or adhesive tabs.

Here, “gel” refers to the material of the press-on. With these two attachment methods, there is no gel to cure under a UV lamp at home. Follow the instructions for your chosen adhesive when applying and removing your nails.

1. Size: your first decision

Size refers to the width of your nails, not their length. A short set may therefore need size L, while a long set may need XS. Do not choose based only on how your hands look.

  1. Measure each of your ten nails at its widest point. Write down the measurements in millimetres, separately for your right and left hands.
  2. Compare them with the size guide for your chosen design. Sizes are not necessarily the same across brands.
  3. Check the fit before applying glue. The press-on should cover your nail without overlapping the skin or needing pressure to sit in place.

Between sizes, NELI recommends choosing the larger one and gently filing the sides to adjust the fit. If your measurements do not match a standard set, check whether a custom size is available on the product page.

Unsure about a measurement? Ask the NELI team for advice before ordering.

2. Shape and length: think about your routine

Do you type a lot, usually keep your nails short or want to try press-ons for the first time? A familiar length can make your first set easier to get used to. If you already enjoy long manicures, choose the silhouette you love.

  • Short: for a subtle look and a length that is easy to get used to.
  • Medium: to explore a more noticeable silhouette without going straight to extra long.
  • Long: to put nail art centre stage, while considering your everyday activities.

For shape, square nails create a clean line, while almond nails have a rounded outline that tapers towards the tip. Look at photos of the nails being worn when available: they help you picture the result beyond the box.

Prefer a short length? Our short press-on nail guide compares three styles by finish and everyday preferences.

3. Nail glue or adhesive tabs: choose for your needs

The two options suit different preferences. Adhesive tabs, also called sticky tabs, are NELI’s recommended choice for an evening, a weekend or frequent manicure changes. Nail glue suits those looking for longer wear.

Like changing your nails often?

Start with adhesive tabs and follow their application and removal instructions.

Want to keep the same set longer?

Choose nail glue and follow the manufacturer’s instructions and precautions.

Wear time depends on preparation, fit, adhesive and your activities. An advertised duration is therefore not an identical guarantee for every pair of hands. Always prepare your nails as instructed and never force removal.

4. Design: start with what you already love

Your first set does not have to change your whole style. A French manicure, a nude shade or a design in your usual colours can be a good starting point. If you love metallic effects, contrasts or embellishments, your first manicure can be more expressive too.

Questions before you begin

What do I need for my first application?

Check what your chosen kit includes before buying separate accessories. The French Cloud kit contains ten press-on nails, nail glue, adhesive tabs, a file, a cuticle pusher and a cleansing wipe. Keep the instructions nearby for preparation and application.

Can I reuse my press-on nails?

NELI press-ons are designed to be reusable. This depends on their condition after removal and how they are cared for. Follow the removal instructions, handle them gently and store them in their box between applications.

What if no standard size fits me?

Check the product page options and choose a custom size when available. Do not force a press-on that is too narrow. The team can help if you are deciding between two options.

Which set should I choose if I am still unsure?

Come back to these three criteria: checked measurements, a familiar length and a design you really love. You can explore other shapes and finishes whenever you feel like a change.
